John Paul Funes was the president and CEO of the Our Lady of the Lake Foundation from 2007 to 2019. The foundation conducted fundraising for the hospital, raising money for projects like the new OLOL Children’s Hospital. In March 2019, the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System released a report alleging Funes diverted $810,000 in donations for his own use. He pleaded guilty to federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering in June 2019 and four months later was sentenced to 33 months in prison and a $50,000 fine. According to a bill of information, he defrauded the foundation from 2012 to September 2018, causing a loss of more than $550,000.
