Baton Rouge is perpetually fighting a losing battle with litter, blight and visual pollution.

As Business Report details in its new cover package, former mayors Bobby Simpson and Kip Holden repeatedly declared war on litter during their combined 16 years in office to no avail.

Current Mayor Sharon Weston Broome is just beginning her second year in office and has already created a task force and strike team while vowing to do something about the city’s littered and blighted landscape.

Still, no matter how many resources Baton Rouge has thrown at the problem, victory is nowhere in sight.

But why is a place that bills itself as the “next great American city” unable to do much of anything about its visual pollution problem? And what does it say about us, as a community, when so many our streets and highways are covered in discarded cups, bottles  and fast food restaurants bags?

Those are among the questions Business Report set out to answer in its new cover package examining the blight of Baton Rouge.

Read the full cover package, which includes features on what experts say is the only solution to our attitudes about trash, efforts to rid the city of blighted properties and what Metro Councilman Matt Watson plans to do about all the signs littered across Baton Rouge.
