They're not just for Washington anymore: Some California cities are extending bailouts to local automobile dealers, reports American Public Media's Marketplace. The city of Victorville, Calif., recently loaned a Chrysler dealership $200,000, after the business was unable to borrow money from other sources. Other cities are considering similar measures. Analysts say this trend may catch on because in many cities, auto dealerships are major sources of sales tax revenue, jobs and charitable contributions. Read the story here.
Ticket sales running ahead of budget: The Louisiana Lottery Corp. says it turned more than $11.9 million over to the state treasury in December, bringing its total transfers in fiscal 2009 to $63.2 million. Lottery officials say through the first six months of the fiscal year, ticket sales are running 1% behind last year's, which was the best year since 1993. Sales are running 3% ahead of what was budgeted.
They wanna buy houses: The number of people looking online for information about houses in Baton Rouge increased by 29.5% in December compared with the year before. Realtor.com, the official Web site of the National Association of Realtors, says that put Baton Rouge in the middle of the pack for increases by cities. Fort Myers-Cape Coral, Fla., saw a 106% increase in the number of people looking for houses in the market, making it the biggest jumper.
