Marex Services: Louisiana-based transportation management firm takes the guesswork out of the supply chain

Some companies treat logistics as an unmanageable and inconsequential part of their overall project spend. Logistics as an after-thought often means losing money due to unrealized efficiencies in the supply chain.

Marex Services can change all that. For 13 years, the Baton Rouge-based logistics service provider has successfully delivered transportation solutions to clients in the industrial, equipment rental, construction, manufacturing and distribution sectors.

Their technology-enabled approach to supply chain management uncovers cost-savings at every step of the way by examining the total “delivered cost” of freight. A boutique supply chain management company, Marex tailors end-to-end solutions to match their client’s unique needs.

“We bring transparency and allow our clients to take back control of their supply chain operations,” says founder and CEO Dom Peré. “The big guys might provide good freight rates, that are initially attractive, but they make their money on the hidden costs all the while taking away your control to manage problems in real-time. Our company will grow 300 percent this year by affording our clients a proactive versus reactive problem solving.”

Marex provides transportation management, supply chain consulting and a wide range of domestic and cross-border logistics services across all modes land, air and sea, with much of their work concentrated in the industrial space. A small company with a big footprint, they have team members in Louisiana, Texas and Tennessee, and internationally in The Netherlands, Paris, Dubai and Guatemala City.

    Eliminating the Guesswork

Peré fell in love with the challenges of supply chain management while working in the Middle East for The Shaw Group from 2003-10. “My team was charged with growing Shaw’s business there,” he says. “We had to get good at logistics to be successful.”

Upon returning to the U.S., he founded Marex after noticing a need for creative and transparent logistics services in the industrial space, as well as in the construction, energy, retail, food and beverage, and defense/aerospace sectors.

Marex treats logistics as an exact science and focuses on the overall delivered cost of freight – from the time it leaves the factory to when it’s installed at the plant. They’re more “hands-on,” realistic and streamlined than some of the large logistics companies and are big on real-time visibility.

Technology is integral to the process. They’ll take your data – in any format – and upload it into their system to enable comprehensive visibility into all your assets, whether they’re on a ship, truck, airplane or rail car. “We bring order to chaos through a centralized transportation management software program that enables us to consolidate and organize everything into one location,” Peré says. “That way, you get a single source of truth. We bring transparency to all that data and show it in real time.”

They’re set to soon launch a new web and mobile app that shows third-party truck drivers in relation to the location of the rental equipment that needs to be transported. “It’s essentially an Uber-like approach to rental equipment trucking,” Peré says. “Drivers will indicate that they’re on duty through the Marex mobile app, and our control tower team will match the closest, most cost-effective driver for the load. This is a rifle versus shotgun approach to procuring a driver for a load that reduces travel times, saves money, increases service quality and decreases the carbon footprint due to the fewer miles required for a load.

At the end of the day, Marex is more a partner than a service provider to its clients. “We operate as an extension of your business approaching your transportation and logistics needs as a chance to save you time and money,” he adds. “By synchronizing your transportation network, we can reduce the total cost of your freight, optimize your supply chain and bring significant costs savings to your project.”
