Tigers get Mingo, Jones: On the eve of college football’s National Signing Day, LSU ranks No. 1 in the ESPN.com recruiting standings and No. 2 in the Rivals.com poll. The Tigers reached 23 commitments, adding Sulphur linebacker Tahj Jones on Monday and West Monroe linebacker Barkevious Mingo this morning. Mingo announced his decision in front of family members and peers in the West Monroe fieldhouse. The 6-foot-5, 206-pound Class 5A defensive player of the year is ranked the No. 9 linebacker in the country by Rivals.com. “I’ve been knowing for a while,” he said in an exclusive interview with the (Monroe) News-Star. “I’ve been down there a pretty good bit and have gotten to know the coaches. I feel like they’ll take care of me.” Jones, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, has been chosen to the Class 5A all-state first team the past two seasons. According to ESPN.com, LSU remains in the hunt for receiver Rueben Randle of Bastrop; cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick of Gadsden, Ala.; defensive end Sam Montgomery of Greenwood, S.C.; offensive tackle Xavier Su’a-Filo of Pleasant Grove, Utah; safety Darren Myles of Atlanta, and receiver Kendall Kelly of Gadsden, Ala.
Fore! A pro-amateur golf tournament will be April 22 at the University Club of Baton Rouge in connection with the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Details about the event will be announced next week, but the tournament will be sponsored by Zurich Financial Services and the Fore! Kids Foundation, which produces the Zurich Classic. Proceeds from the local tournament will go toward children’s charities in Baton Rouge.
