Voice of reason

To the editor:

“Fueling Smart Growth” (July 1) was a well-thought, well-written article. Here’s hoping our city/parish leaders are reading your publication and heeding its advice.

Thanks for allowing JR Ball to present his voice of reason to the money-hungry-damn-the-consequences society we call home.

Pamela Caillouet, Prairieville

That’s just loopy

To the editor:

I found the results of your poll regarding tool fees for the proposed Baton Rouge bypass [Daily Report, June 16] interesting. Since most people in Baton Rouge will have no need to use the roads, of course they are perfectly willing to have others pay a toll.

I have not yet seen any justification for the north loop. If there must be a loop, it has to go south to connect with Interstate 10, I-12 and the New Orleans traffic. But I cannot imagine any volume need for the north loop. It is plainly a politically-driven development corridor.

Smacked down

To the editor:

Thank you for exposing not only what is going on behind the scenes regarding this pay raise, but for naming names as well. This is a slapdown to us working people that are grateful if we can get a mere 4% cost of living raise each year.

The legislators believe the public will soon forget this and all will be forgotten during re-election in 2011. Hopefully journalists as yourself will keep a light shining on this and it will not be forgotten.

Gayle Sullivan, Baton Rouge

On a positive note

To the editor:

It would be supportive to our market and local community if you reported on some positives rather than the negatives in the market [“What Baton Rouge’s real estate experts aren’t telling you,” June 30]. Perhaps, this could be a worthy story.

Over the last several months, we have closed and/or presold four homes in The Settlement at Willow Grove. An Ancestor’s Court property closed for $720,000, which equates to $220 per square foot. Another closing took place on Willow Grove Boulevard for $500,000, or $219 per square foot. The two presold homes additionally are over $200 per square foot.

Wow. There are positives in our market today.

Daryl May, Baton Rouge

Truly rarefied air

To the editor:

If we don’t do something soon, there will be no Baton Rouge airport left (“Air sickness,” July 1). I really thought that after Katrina, our Metro Airport would escalate in flight availability and popularity. It has done just the opposite. How do we expect our city to grow when our airport is shrinking?

Laurie Aronson Lipsey, Baton Rouge
