Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says there is a bipartisan compromise to end the partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration that has left 74,000 transportation and construction workers idled. In a statement issued today, the majority leader did not specify details. But other officials say they expect the Senate to accept a House-passed bill as early as Friday. The government has been losing about $30 million a day in uncollected airline ticket taxes since the shutdown began on July 23, when FAA’s operating authority expired. Legislation was stalled because some members of Congress objected to $16 million in cuts to air service subsidies received by 13 rural communities and balked at a provision that makes it tougher for airline workers to unionize.
