After considering several conflicting proposals, business-led policy group A Better Ascension is recommending the parish have both an elected “ceremonial” president and an appointed parish manager.

Should the Ascension Parish Home Rule Charter Revision Committee accept the proposal at its meeting today, the Ascension Parish Council is expected to take the matter up at its meeting on Thursday.

If approved by the council, the proposal will be put on the Dec. 8 ballot for voters to decide. The deadline to get items on the December ballot is July 18.

ABA’s latest proposal was officially submitted to the committee on Friday after multiple proposals were suggested as the committee’s meeting last week.

The specifics of the dual-led government were not elaborated on in the proposal, but Committee Chairman Roy Quezaire Jr. expects the details to be hashed out at today’s meeting. The committee will meet at 5 p.m. at the Ascension Parish Courthouse in Gonzales.
