The Deville Apartments, one of Baton Rouge’s more striking examples of Mid-Century Modern architecture, is slated for a $2.5 million renovation. Collis Temple Jr., who is the owner and contractor on the project, has filed for permits with the city-parish to remodel the complex, which consists of a 17,000-square-foot, glass-front-paneled main building with 30 apartments, and two smaller buildings with a total of 12,000 square feet and 22 apartments.
Dyke Nelson is the architect on the project and says state and federal historic building tax credits will help finance the renovation of the Deville, which was built in 1956 by A.C. Lewis.
“We’re bringing them back to their former Mid Century, cool, funky style,” says Nelson, who has a growing list of downtown rehabilitation projects to his name. “It has a great history and is in an up-and-coming neighborhood.”
The Deville, which has been owned by Temple for years and long languished in a state of disrepair, is located downtown, just east of Interstate-10 and one block from The Elysian, a mixed-income apartment complex that has helped to breathe new life into the area between downtown and Mid City. The Deville Apartments will be market rate units targeted to young professionals downtown, Nelson says. Construction is already under way. The project should be complete by May. —Stephanie Riegel
