Christmas jeer
To the publisher:
I have always thought it sad that politicians or others will do a charitiable act, then manipulate the media to broadcast their good deeds. I’m not sure if Cleo Fields is looking for votes for the future, but just the fact that he self-promotes using benevolent “giving” to stay in the limelight is very sad indeed [“Publisher’s View,” Jan. 1]. Giving should be done with no thought of any reward [publicity or future votes]. Seneca, the Roman philosopher, wrote long ago, “There is no grace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers.” I think in this case there are sticky fingers.
