The Baton Rouge Early Risers Kiwanis Club awarded $50,000 to the YWCA Greater Baton Rouge’s Center for Family Empowerment. The grant will support the YWCA Parents as Teachers: Born to Learn program, a four-part intervention model that includes increasing parent knowledge of early childhood development and improving parenting practices, providing early detection of developmental delays and heath issues, preventing child abuse and neglect and increasing children’s school readiness and school success.

Jim Talbot Real Estate moved into their new offices at Drusilla Lane and Common Street, just south of Old Hammond Highway. Former LSU Basketball Coach Dale Brown cut the ribbon on the 4,000-square-foot building. The building includes 13 offices and was built by Talbot & Talbot General Contractors.
AWARDS/HONORS
The Louisiana Bar Foundation approved more than $2.3 million in 2008 funding during their November meeting. Of that total, $281,014 was awarded to organizations in the Capital Region, including $6,000 to the Capital Area Baton Rouge Bar Foundation, $2,000 to the Baton Rouge Bar Foundation Teen Court, $12,000 to the Capital Area Family Violence Intervention Services, $166,616 to the Capital Area Legal Services Corporation and $3,897 to CASA of the 18th Judicial District Court.
The Baton Rouge Growth Coalition, an organization representing the commercial and residential real estate development industry in Baton Rouge, selected officers and board of directors for 2008. The officers are President Tom Cook of Cook, Moore & Associates, Vice President Trula Remson of Remson-Haley-Herpin Architects, Immediate Past President George Kurz of Kurz & Hebert and Executive Director Michael McDuff.
The Louisiana Restaurant Association announced its state board of directors for 2008. Representing Baton Rouge were Bruce Attinger of Outback Steakhouse, Jeanette Eisworth of Don’s Seafood & Steakhouse, Micky Freiberg of Capitol City Produce, Brian Girardot of Community Coffee Company, Les Guerin of Kleinpeter Farms Dairy, Miriam Juban of Juban’s Restaurant & Catering, Hudson Lemoine of Mockler Beverage Company, David Morris of Zea Rotisserie Restaurants and Jim Urdiales of Mestizo Restaurant.
Twenty-nine Louisiana construction and design projects received Best of 2007 recognition from South Central Construction magazine, a trade magazine. Representing Baton Rouge were the Amedisys Corporate Headquarters by Arkel Constructors Inc. for Best Office Building, Reiger Production Facility for The Advocate by The Lemoine Co. for Best Private Building, Kohl’s Department Store by MAPP Construction for Best Commercial Building and Eden Park Branch Library by Tipton Associates for Best Public Architecture. Also honored with Awards of Excellence were Picardy Avenue Interchange/Interstate 10 widening and rehabilitation by James Construction Group for Transportation.
Lynne Baggett, an associate professor of graphic design in the LSU School of Art, won the silver award in the 2007 Create Awards competition in the category of graphic communication illustration. Her entry, “Check the Fine Print II” on a Last and Fast postcard, was among 2,400 entries in the international competition judged by more than 20 professionals in eight creative industries.
W. Todd Monroe, an assistant professor in LSU’s Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, received the CAREER Award from the Biomedical Engineering division of the National Science Foundation. The award is the foundation’s most highly esteemed award for junior faculty members. Award recipients are chosen on the basis of creative career-development plans that effectively integrate research and education.
Carol Carter, an instructor in LSU’s E.J. Ourso College of Business’ Rucks Department of Management and assistant director of the Stephenson Entrepreneurship Institute, won the Entrepreneur 101 Award at the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education. The Consortium is a national membership association of 95 organizations that advocate entrepreneurship education.
The Louisiana Business & Technology Center, part of the Stephenson Entrepreneurship Institute, presented five awards and one recognition to its client companies at its graduation ceremony. Tenant Company of the Year Award was presented to Geoshield, a manufacturer and distributor of architectural window film. Graduate Company of the Year Award was presented to Healthcare Highlighs, a graphic design and marketing firm specializing in conceptialization, corporate identity and branding for business and medical practices. Client Provider of the Year Award was presented to Object 9, a nationally recognized marketing, public relations and creative firm with offices in Baton Rouge and Atlanta.
CERTIFICATIONS
Thomas Gautreau of Woman’s Hospital earned the designation of Certified Healthcare Facility Manager, a national credential that distinguishes an individual as being among the elite in a critical field of health care management. An individual must satisfy eligibility requirements that incorporate a blend of work experience and education, agree to adhere to professional standards of conduct and pass an examination to earn the designation.
