News Alert: Livingston assessor urges rollbacks in property millages

Livingston Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor is urging taxing districts to roll back their property tax millages after a reassessment showed that taxable value of property in the parish has gone up by one-third. Taylor says the explosive population growth, coupled with the once-in-every-four-year reassessment, caused the value of property in Livingston to go from $273 million in 2007 to $368 million in 2008. He's asking the parish tax districts to hold off rolling millages forward so taxpayers don't get hit with increases. The Livingston Parish Council is scheduled to vote Thursday on rates for the taxing districts it oversees; the sheriff's office and the school board have already voted to roll their millages back.

Tornadoes, hail to one inch in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph and dangerous lightning are possible in the watch area. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area, and persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. National home values post record year-to-year drop

U.S. home values dropped nearly 10% in the second quarter when compared to the same period a year ago, according to a report from an online real estate community. Zillow.com says the plunge means 29% of people who bought a home in the past five years now owe more than the property is worth. Home values in metro New Orleans dropped by 1.4% in the quarter to $150,000. Out of the 165 U.S. housing markets on which the company reports, only 25 reported an increase in home values or stayed at 2007 levels. Baton Rouge is not included in the Zillow.com reports. A company official says most markets will remain in negative territory for the next few quarters, as home prices continue to drop in some areas. To look at a map on home prices by city, click here.

GOP embraces social networking with new Web site

If MySpace and Facebook don’t lean enough to the right for you, there’s always LaGOP.net. It’s the new social networking site for Republican activists to interact and dish on the latest political issues. Members can connect with likeminded Republicans by creating their own profile, starting their own blog and commenting on other’s blogs. The site is the mastermind of Charlie Davis, recently hired by the Louisiana Republican Party as director of Victory 2008, the state party’s federal campaign arm. So far, there are 144 members, ranging from Michael Eby of Plaquemine, an aide to former Congressman Richard Baker, to Matt Parker, executive director of the state party. There’s a public forum (no real activity yet) and discussion groups based solely around Republican candidates (John McCain for President has the most members with 25; John Kennedy for U.S. Senate has 24). Also on the site is a section for pictures (nameless faces posing with famous GOP dignitaries) and videos (mostly campaign commercials). It’s one of the many technological upgrades the party is expected to enjoy thanks to Davis, who likewise serves as president of Liquid Ventures, a business incubation and consulting firm that houses Prodigy Sports Group, FanTheFire.com, Varsity Vests and GatorWorks Web Design. Davis previously served as finance director and political director for the Louisiana Republican Party during the 1990's.—Jeremy Alford
