Zipcar says it will go live with a four-car pilot program in downtown Baton Rouge within the next two months.
The car sharing service recently inked a deal with the city-parish to bring the program downtown. Customers must sign up for memberships to use the vehicles, which can be accessed with a card or the Zipcar mobile app.
Zipcar spokeswoman Katelyn Chesley says the operation at LSU, which launched in March, has been a “huge success,” and led to the deal to expand downtown.
Meanwhile, Zipcar will offer LSU student-members free access to seven of its eight vehicles currently on campus on election night. The offer is part of a national program to give student-members of the company free access to the polls on Nov. 8, the company says.
Students who are members of Zipcar will get free access to the vehicles from 6 to 10 p.m. for the initiative, called “Drive the Vote 2016.”
“Regardless of political affiliation or sentiment, we believe that voting is a civic duty, and we want to ensure that access to transportation isn’t a barrier to casting a ballot,” Andrew Daley, Zipcar vice president of marketing, says in a statement.
Although the company encourages people to use the free promotion to go to the polls and vote, it acknowledges that anyone can take advantage of the free opportunity for any purpose.
