U.S. Sen. David Vitter is asking oil giant BP to put up cash now to help Louisiana with its restoration efforts after last year’s oil spill, rather than wait until a complex tally of what the company will owe is complete. Vitter, R-Metairie, says it would be cheaper and make more sense to work now on fisheries restoration, oyster habitat repair and marshland stabilization, given that the legal process outlined in federal oil spill pollution law could take as long as eight to 10 years. Vitter sent BP America’s chairman a letter today urging an upfront payment. He and U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu also are sponsoring federal legislation that would force such a payment to get restoration projects moving. The one-year anniversary of the blast that caused the oil spill is Wednesday.
