When state lawmakers meet in special and regular sessions this spring, officials say they will receive a penny more per mile for travel to the State Capitol. House Clerk Alfred “Butch” Speer tells The Times-Picayune that as of Jan. 1, the legislative travel allowance went from 50 cents to 51 cents a mile. The mileage and daily meal and lodging allowances for legislators are tied by law to the rates the federal government pays for travel, meals and lodging for its employees. Speer says the legislative budget will be able to absorb the slight increase in travel costs. He says lawmakers who live in the same parish where a meeting is held do not receive mileage payments.
