A legislative committee has defeated a bill that would have limited the terms of local school boards members. The committee vote was 11-6 against advancing the bill. State Rep. Steve Carter, a Baton Rouge Republican, says his term-limit bill would have helped to bring fresh ideas to local school boards in a state where student performance lags behind much of the nation. Carter’s bill, which mirrors reforms being pushed by Education Superintendent Paul Pastorek, had been backed by business groups, including the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and LABI. It’s part of a package of reforms he introduced which aim to give more power to local school superintendents. Opponents in the House and Governmental Affairs committee meeting say there was no proof that term limits would improve student performance.
