Will discuss future of college sports: Leaders from about 50 Division I universities will gather for a two-day retreat with NCAA President Mark Emmert this summer. Emmert, a former LSU chancellor, says he wants to conduct a discussion about the future of Division I sports. One topic on his agenda is how to maintain amateurism in college sports: Those rules restrict how schools compensate athletes for their work on the field, court, and so on. Emmert says he wants more input from university presidents and chancellors about how the NCAA should move forward, too, though he doesn’t expect any changes to occur soon. The meeting is scheduled to take place in August. Other topics on the agenda include athlete academics and athletic department finances.

Buckeye star looks at NFL: Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his agent and has taken steps toward making himself available for an NFL supplemental draft. Attorney Larry James says Pryor was in Miami and had signed an agreement with Rosenhaus, a high-powered agent who represents some of the biggest names in sports: for example, standout wide receivers Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco along with former Ohio State running back and Pryor teammate Chris “Beanie” Wells, now with the Arizona Cardinals. “I am happy that he (Pryor) has reached this point and he’s in secure hands,” James says. Pryor, James and at least two other people spent the past few days discussing the quarterback’s options in selecting an agent. Then Pryor flew to Miami on Sunday and signed a contract with Rosenhaus late this morning. James also formally notified Ohio State that Pryor had signed with an agent, which officially made the three-year starter ineligible in the eyes of the university and the NCAA. That clears the way for the next step in Pryor’s hopes of making it into the NFL.
