Southeastern Louisiana University plans to eliminate 64 positions and impose furloughs for all staff and non-tenured faculty in order to deal with state budget cuts. The university says 45 of the jobs it will eliminate are vacant. “Unfortunately, the magnitude of the budget cut and the need to exercise prudent management of our remaining resources have forced us also to eliminate 19 occupied positions,” says John L. Crain, Southeastern president.
Southeastern’s budget is $10.1 million less than what it was during fiscal 2009. The school expects to implement a furlough plan in the fall and spring semesters, which would subject staff to between two and four days off without pay. The furloughs will include all department heads, deans and other members of the administration, including vice presidents and the president. The furloughs must be approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
