The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Saturday for the statewide special and municipal primary election.

Voters in East Baton Rouge, Livingston and Ascension parishes will help decide the race for state treasurer and three constitutional amendments in addition to casting ballots for local, limited or parishwide elections.

The most prominent race on the ballot is for state treasurer. The statewide office became open when John Kennedy was elected to the U.S. Senate last year. Six candidates are vying for the seat: Angele Davis, Derrick Edwards, Terry Hughes, Joseph D. Little, Neil Riser and John Schroder. A runoff, if needed, will take place on Nov. 18.

Secretary of State Tom Schedler expects participation in Saturday’s election will be low, with only about 15% turnout of Louisiana’s nearly 3 million registered voters. Only 95,481 people across Louisiana took part in early voting, statistics from Schedler’s office show. Of that pool, 7,945 people in East Baton Rouge, 1,808 in Ascension and 1,982 in Livingston voted early.

“I have indicated that I’ll happily eat crow if Louisiana’s voters prove me wrong, and I hope they do,” Schedler says in a statement.
