The Board of Regents today voted to shut down 109 academic degree programs at Louisiana colleges and universities for failing to graduate enough students. The students now enrolled in the programs will have an opportunity to complete their degrees or transfer to another program. The board also voted to consolidate 189 degree programs. Jim Purcell, commissioner of higher education, says this is “just the beginning of the process” and the next step will probably be reviewing degree programs on a regional basis.
