The number of anonymous charitable donors has increased during the current recession, according to an analysis by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Since June 2008, nearly 19% of the gifts worth $1 million or more have come from donors who did not want to be known. Over the past decade the proportion of large gifts from undisclosed donors has ranged from 3% to 5% a year. One consultant says the increase in anonymous donors may be from individuals who don’t want people to know that they’ve suffered little—or even prospered—during the recession.
