After roughly three months on the job, East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters Steve Rayborn is overseeing what could be one of the busiest days of his brief term in office. Today is the final day to register to vote in the Oct. 24 primary elections.

“We’ve definitely had an increase in traffic at the counter and on the phone,” says Rayborn. “We don’t have lines out to the street, but we’re busy. It’s difficult to tell what the final numbers will be because so many people are choosing to register online now.”

For those with access, visiting GeauxVote.com is becoming a prevailing option. All you need is a Louisiana ID or driver’s license.

Rayburn says a steady flow of people also have been turning in their yields from various registration drives from around the city.

As of Sept. 1, 278,571 voters were registered in East Baton Rouge Parish, of which 135,472 were Democrat and 76,264 were Republican. Statewide, total voter registration stood at 2.8 million on the same date, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans 1.3 million to 809,507.

Rayburn was appointed by the Metro Council in June to replace former Registrar Elaine Lamb, who retired after more than 40 years at the helm.
