Should public officials get to spend $40,000 in public money without bothering to get a bid? That’s the question posed in a bill by Sen. Robert Adley, a Benton Republican. Present law requires that the purchase of any materials or supplies exceeding $20,000 in public funds be advertised and awarded to the lowest responsible bidder. But if Adley gets his way, that limit will double, to $40,000. The measure has been referred to the Committee on Local & Municipal Affairs, which meets Thursday. Adley did not return a call from 10/12 seeking comment.
