Southern University is no longer planning to toughen its admission standards for students. Ronald Mason Jr., president of the Southern System, said Tuesday the implementation of higher standards was being delayed because of financial concerns about sustaining a drop in enrollment at a time of higher education budget cuts. The school had planned on boosting the minimum GPA from a 2.0 to a 2.5 and raise minimum ACT scores from 20 to 22. The Baton Rouge Area Chamber released a research paper Tuesday, urging Southern to phase in higher admission standards as a way of improving overall graduation rates at the university.
