Jim Talbot, a former member of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board, made a modest proposal Thursday on Jim Engster’s radio show on WRKF. Talbot says the parish might be better off without a school board. Talbot, who admits the premise is “far-fetched,” says the idea derives from his experience while serving on the school board in the mid-1980s. “School board members, instead of solving problems, were part of the problems,” he says. Talbot says he has no connection or affiliation with the current board, so he doesn’t know if this is still an issue. But he says the first step toward improving parish public schools is to solve the tremendous number of discipline problems.
