It’s time to put the skids on government’s ability to roll forward millages, an overwhelming majority of 10/12 poll respondents say. Asked whether they would vote in favor of such a limitation, 79% said yes, 18% said no, and 2% said they didn’t know. Sen. Jack Donahue, R-Mandeville, has proposed a bill that would limit a taxing authority’s power to roll forward millages without first getting voter approval. Such entities could only increase the tax rate enough to collect up to 2.5% more than they did the previous calendar year. In an interview last week, however, Donahue says if the legislation moves forward, he may limit its reach to unelected entities only. This week’s question: Should the amount that government officials can spend without seeking a bid be doubled to $40,000?
