A new report says the number of road deaths dropped nationally by 9% in 2008, but only by 1% in the region that includes Louisiana. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the region made up of Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico posted the smallest drop, while the New England states saw a 14% decrease in highway fatalities, the largest in the country. Projections show the number of deaths from traffic crashes dropped from 41,059 to 37,313. The drop in fatalities is probably due to high gas prices, since overall vehicle miles traveled were down 3.6. See the report here.
