Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center are participating in a first-of-its-kind individualized cancer treatment program. The centers are one of 18 sites participating in the program headed up by Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. The Total Cancer Care program aims to specialize treatment based on the unique genes in tumors. By studying the different genes in a tumor, doctors can develop personalized drug therapy, instead of just treating a cancer based on what organ it affects. So far, about 80 patients at OLOL and Mary Bird have agreed to participate in the program.
