Billy Nungesser, the Plaquemines Parish president who received national attention for his handling of the BP oil spill, is set to announce his campaign for lieutenant governor on Monday. Nungesser’s campaign sent out a press release promising a “major political announcement” on Monday, topped off with a logo for his lieutenant governor campaign. Nungesser, a Republican, became the public face of anger and frustration over the spill. He’s been signaling his intention to run for the lieutenant governor’s seat for several months, saying the position is crucial to rebuilding Louisiana’s image. He will face a fellow Republican, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, in the race. Nungesser is set to start his campaign Monday morning in Belle Chasse, then hold a press conference that evening at T.J. Ribs on Acadian Thruway. Campaign stops are also planned later next week in Lafayette, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Shreveport and Monroe.
