On a visit to Washington state, B.F. “Andy” Anderson, a private portfolio manager in Baton Rouge, test-drove an electric car built by Tesla Motors. He needed to do so because he owned a lot of the company’s stock, he explained to his wife.

“She’s giving me this lecture: I know what you’re doing, and you’re not going to buy one of these cars,’ because it’s too expensive.” Anderson recalls. But after driving a Model S performance model, he adds, “She says, I want one.'”

So Anderson now is the proud owner of a $96,000 Tesla Model S, looking forward to when Baton Rouge will host one of Tesla’s “supercharger” stations, which the company says could happen this year. He says the company’s success long-term depends on whether it can beat GM to the market with a more affordable electric car.

We bought Tesla stock and made a bunch of money last year. I’m out of the stock right now, but I’m looking at it again. Tesla is building the cars as fast as they can to meet demand.

I can go about 266 miles per charge. There’s no maintenance. The only fluid they want you to fool with for the first 10 years is windshield wiper fluid.

Once you go electric, there’s no going back. It’s such a superior technology to the internal combustion engine. The car is phenomenal. It runs like a rocket ship.
