School raised about a third of money needed: The Louisiana College law school in downtown Shreveport is on track to open in fall 2012. The (Alexandria) Town Talk says the private college hopes to raise $22.7 million for the Paul Pressler School of Law; so far nearly one-third of that amount has been obtained. J. Michael Johnson, the founding dean of the law school, says fund-raising has been “a little ahead of schedule.”
Reports of layoffs down: A survey of more than 2,200 adults finds that employee job satisfaction is on the rise, despite increased concerns about layoffs and pessimism about raises. Thirty percent of employees who participated in the quarterly Glassdoor Employment Confidence Survey say they are more satisfied in their jobs than they were a year ago. That compares with the 26% who reported increased satisfaction in the survey during the second quarter of 2010. Despite this, 22% of employees are concerned about layoffs, up from 17% a year ago and the highest level since third quarter 2009. And 48% of employees don’t expect to get raises in the next year, the highest percentage in six quarters.
Third time a charm: The South Korean city of Pyeongchang has been awarded the 2018 Winter Olympics after failing in two previous attempts. Pyeongchang defeated rivals Munich and Annecy, France, today in the first round of a secret ballot of the International Olympic Committee. The Koreans had lost narrowly in previous bids for the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Pyeongchang will be the first city in Asia outside Japan to host the Winter Games. Japan held the games in Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia.
