Apply here: Police departments across the United States are seeing a surge in applications as people fleeing the economic downturn look for secure jobs, USA Today reports. Officials in Houston say they’ve been getting 200 more applicants a month for police jobs since late 2008, and the Phoenix Police Department set a record for the number of applicants last year, with 4,000. The quality of applicants has also gone up, as people with experience in fields such as construction work and finance are now seeking law enforcement jobs. “We’re talking about people who have been in the workforce for a long time,” Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt says. “They know what being part of a team means and are more mature about the world of work.” Read the story here.

Shame, shame, shame: A new report says parents spend about 3.5 hours a day watching television and browsing the Internet for non-work related purposes, compared with spending 32 minutes a day reading to their children. The study, which was commissioned by LeapFrog Enterprises, found that 83% of parents read to their child daily and 72% wish they spent more time reading with their children.
