New name, new owner, same brew: Perks Coffee & Tea, a popular Perkins Road neighborhood coffee shop that was closed due to a failure to pay taxes, has reopened under new ownership with a new name. The business is now called Garden District Coffee; and David Welsh, who managed the shop before it was shut down March 1, is the owner/operator. Welsh says all but one member of the Perks staff has returned to work at Garden District Coffee.
Urges business leaders to listen to poets: Danny Heitman, a local author and Advocate columnist, has written a column for the Wall Street Journal saying how poets have lessons for business leaders. He mentions Wallace Stevens and L.E. Sissman, acclaimed poets who were successful businessmen. “Maybe it’s time that we reconnect with poetry, not as a rarified ritual, but as a vital force of erudition and insight that can help shape the very texture of our national life, including corporate culture,” Heitman says.
