Milk does a body and brain good: Devin Guillory, a recent McKinley High graduate, was one of 25 outstanding high school student-athletes honored by the National Milk Mustache “got milk?” Campaign and USA Today. Guillory has been awarded a $7,500 scholarship and will get to spend a weekend at Walt Disney World after winning the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache Athlete of the Year honor. He’s set to attend Stanford University this fall with a major in electrical engineering and will be a preferred walk-on for the football team.
Save more, spend less: Frugal consumers trimmed spending in April although by less than expected—as rising unemployment kept pocketbooks in check. With income growth far outpacing spending, Americans’ personal savings rate zoomed to 5.7%, the highest since February 1995, the Commerce Department reported today. Consumer spending dipped 0.1% in April. That was slightly less than the 0.2% reduction economists were expecting, although it marked the second straight month that consumers cut back. The pullback came after a burst of buying at the start of the year as shoppers took advantage of deeply discounted merchandise and other promotions. Americans’ incomes—the fuel for future spending—jumped by 0.5% following two straight months of declines.
228 people aboard: A missing Air France jet carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris ran into lightning and strong thunderstorms over the Atlantic Ocean, officials said today. Brazil began a search mission off its northeastern coast. Chief Air France spokesman Francois Brousse said “it is possible” the plane was hit by lightning. Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330, left Rio on Sunday at 5 p.m. CDT with 216 passengers and 12 crew members on board, company spokeswoman Brigitte Barrand said. About four hours later, the plane sent an automatic signal indicating electrical problems while going through strong turbulence, Air France said. The plane “crossed through a thunderous zone with strong turbulence” at 9 p.m. CDT Sunday. An automatic message was received 14 minutes later “signaling electrical circuit malfunction.”
