More wealthy families teaching children: The number of children being home-schooled has nearly doubled in the past decade, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Education. As of spring 2007, 2.9% of all school-aged children were being taught at home, compared with 1.7% in 1999, USA Today reports. The number of girls being home-schooled went up sharply, from 51% of students in 1999 to 58% in 2007. The number of upper income families teaching their children at home also posted gains; in 1999, 63.6% of home-schooling families earned less than $50,000 annually. Now, 60% earn more than $50,000.
