Golden shovels: The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board is breaking ground today on its new Career & Technical Education Center in the mixed-use Ardendale development. The $17 million, 34,000-square-foot career high school will offer training sessions in manufacturing, medical fields, computer science and skilled crafts, and will house no more than 150 students at any given time.

Planning ahead: The second round of public meetings to gather input on the Capital Region’s Long-Range Transportation Plan, as known as MOVE2042, is set to begin Tuesday in Denham Springs. The meetings, hosted by the Capital Region Planning Commission, are being held to gather input from the public on how transportation dollars should be spent, whether they are willing to support additional funds for transportation system improvements and what options they prefer for generating additional funds. Meetings also will be held in West Baton Rouge, Iberville and Ascension parishes. A meeting for East Baton Rouge Parish residents will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Main Library at Goodwood. Get more information.

Eyes on the sky: In what promises to be the most observed and photographed eclipses in history, Americans are staked out at viewing spots along a narrow corridor from Oregon to South Carolina to watch the moon blot out the midday sun today. In Baton Rouge, residents will only be able to partially view the eclipse, which is expected to begin at 11:57 a.m. end at 2:54 p.m. Officials at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo say they’ll be observing animals to see how they react to the event. Meanwhile, viewing parties and events are taking place around the city. Read the full story from The Associated Press and get more information how you can view the eclipse.
