Event will now be held in the Manship Theatre lobby: Tonight’s DIG Big into Literacy fundraiser, hosted by former LSU basketball star Glen “Big Baby” Davis, will now be held inside the Shaw Center because of inclement weather. The event, which starts at 8 p.m., will be held in the Manship Theatre lobby and on the second-floor gallery space. Tickets for the event are $20 and $40 and include free food and music and a chance to meet Davis and possibly shoot hoops with him.
Major retailers looking at design: Drew Ann Long, a Slidell native and LSU graduate, has developed a shopping cart for disabled children. Long, who now lives in suburban Birmingham, Ala., came up with the idea for the cart through difficulties she had in shopping with her daughter, Caroline. Long says as her daughter grew older, it became more difficult to place her in a traditional cart when they went to the grocery store or other retailers. And it was nearly impossible to maneuver a wheelchair and a grocery basket at once. Caroline’s Cart features handles that swing back to provide access to the seat, a harness to keep the child secure, and a seat that faces the person pushing the cart so that the child can maintain eye contact with his or her caregiver. Long got an engineering design firm in Indianapolis to develop the prototype, and she’s working on patenting the cart. The cart has been endorsed by Easter Seals. Long is talking with major retailers such as Walmart, Target and Publix about buying the carts when they go on sale at the end of the year. For more details, go to carolinescart.com.
Move would beef up iTunes: Apple is in talks to potentially bid for video-streaming service Hulu, according to a person close to the situation. An acquisition of Hulu could bolster Apple’s iTunes store, which provides videos users can rent or buy, and help it compete with Netflix. Hulu offers a subscription streaming service. It also brings in revenue from ads that accompany content it streams to users free-of-charge. Hulu, whose owners include The Walt Disney Co., News Corp. and Comcast Corp., started presenting its financial information to interested bidders late last month, after an unsolicited offer prompted its board to look for other offers. Apple’s interest in Hulu was reported earlier by Bloomberg News.
