Regional champs: A Baton Rouge Magnet High team is headed to the National Science Bowl, which will be held next month in Washington, D.C. The team of Justin Moore, Conan Cai, George Li, Bob Liang and Sreeja Sanampudi, and coached by Sangita Mathur, won the regional competition last month at Tulane University. Along with winning a trip to Washington, the students also earned $750 for the school science department. The Science Bowl is a Jeopardy!-type game that quizzes students on their knowledge of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science and math. Two other Baton Rouge High teams finished third and fourth at the regional competition, just behind the team from the Louisiana School for Math, Science and Arts. The national competition is open to one school from each state.

Program aims to train young entrepreneurs: The first Lemonade Day, which seeks to train boys and girls on how to start, own and operate their own lemonade stand, will be held May 7. A press conference, featuring Mayor Kip Holden, Raising Cane’s founder Todd Graves and businessman John Georges, will be held downtown at 11:30 a.m. Thursday to discuss details. Free Raising Cane’s lemonade will also be provided at the event, which will be held at the corner of Florida and Third streets. The goal is to reach 5,000 boys and girls in south Louisiana with the event, which was started in Houston in 2007.

Cool gadget: Digital FX, a Baton Rouge-based production studio, is featured today on tech blog Engadget.com. David Coner, the studio’s manager, is featured in a video showing off the RED EPIC-M digital camera. Digital FX is one of the first studios to get the handmade cameras, which sells for $58,000. “It’s great exposure for us,” says Greg Milneck, president of Digital FX. “It’s also great exposure for this industry in Louisiana and Baton Rouge. There are only a hundred or so of these cameras in the world, and most of those are in Los Angeles. For a Baton Rouge company to be chosen to get one says a lot.” Director Peter Jackson plans to shoot his upcoming The Hobbit movies with the same RED EPIC-M camera. See the video here.
