Also backing two candidates in secretary of state’s race: The Louisiana Assessors’ Association has come out with its list of endorsements for the fall elections. The assessors are backing four statewide incumbents: Gov. Bobby Jindal, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, Attorney General Buddy Caldwell and Secretary of State Tom Schedler. But the group also is backing Billy Nungesser in the lieutenant governor’s race and Jim Tucker in the secretary of state’s race. The statewide primary elections are set for Oct. 22.

Lady Vols coach plans to stay behind the bench: Pat Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in college basketball, has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, a progressive disease that could lead to Alzheimer’s. Summitt told The Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel she plans to continue coaching the Tennessee women’s team. “There’s not going to be any pity party and I’ll make sure of that,” Summitt told the newspaper. Summitt, who has won 1,071 games and led the Lady Vols to eight NCAA titles, says she plans to use medication and mental exercise to combat the disease.
