A restaurant called Poke City is slated to open on Bluebonnet Boulevard in mid-October, the latest eatery to serve up Hawaiian-inspired street food in Baton Rouge.
Owner Benny Zheng, who also owns Nagoya Japanese Sushi & Seafood Buffet, says he picked the Bluebonnet location—formerly the site of a Dunkin’ Donuts, near the Burbank Drive intersection—because of its proximity to LSU’s campus.
“This is healthy food, and young people like healthy concepts,” Zheng says.
The menu, now available on Waitr, allows customers to either build their own poke bowl or pick from several signature items such as a “Blazin’ Sunset Bowl” or a “Dancing Shrimp Bowl,” along with other dishes that have a rice base topped with fish, cucumber, seaweed and other proteins.
Zheng’s son Jeff says his father has leased the space for five years, during which time he hopes to hire roughly 20 employees, primarily LSU students.
Poke City joins the market after Southfin Southern Poke opened its Perkins Road and Corporate Boulevard locations, and New Orleans-based Poke Loa announced it is opening a restaurant on Highland Road.
