The U.S. Postal Service has released a list of 3,653 post offices that it wants to close because of low activity. More than 50 of the targeted post offices are in Louisiana, with the vast majority based in rural areas. Five are in the Capital Region: the Istrouma location in Baton Rouge and rural branches in Iberville and Pointe Coupee parishes. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Postal Service estimates it would save $200 million annually by closing the listed locations. The recommended closings were based on a formula that identified post offices with low customer traffic and workload.
