Julian T. White, who in 1971 became the first black faculty member at LSU, died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. He was 73. White was an architecture professor who also taught at Southern University and Tuskegee University. He served on the LSU faculty for 33 years before retiring in 2003. White was a native of Alexandria, who earned degrees from the University of Illinois. He also had an architecture firm in Baton Rouge, which specialized in working with area schools and churches across the nation. White served for years on the state Board of Architectural Examiners. Services for White will be held at noon Saturday in Alexandria, and a memorial service will be held at a later date at University Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Julian T. White Memorial Scholarship fund at the LSU Foundation.
