NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Officials at Loyola University in New Orleans say a record number of freshman applications could lead to Loyola having its largest fall freshman class since Hurricane Katrina cut short the fall 2005 semester.

The university said that as of last Friday it had recieved 4,740 applications, an 18 percent increase over this time last year. The university has received 783 freshman deposits, up from 718 at the same time last year.

In a Tuesday news release, Sal Liberto, Loyola’s vice president for enrollment management, said the figures will likely fluctuate in the next few months. But, he adds, they bode well for the university having its largest freshman class since it saw record enrollment in 2005, when more than 900 freshmen were welcomed to campus.
