The Louisiana House is set today to debate a proposal to postpone a tax break for three years. The bill by Sen. Lydia Jackson, D-Shreveport, would delay a law that allows individual taxpayers to deduct all of their excess itemized deductions compared with the current 65%. The change is to take effect for 2009 tax forms, but the bill would delay that change until taxpayers fill out their 2012 forms. Supporters want the money to go to reduce higher education budget cuts, but a majority of House members publicly oppose the tax break delay.
