Louisiana drivers can expect their car insurance rates to rise again this year, Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon tells NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.

Exactly how much rates will rise depends on your insurer and zip code. The Louisiana Department of Insurance in 2017 approved double-digit rate hikes for at least five insurers that either took effect late last year or will kick in sometime this year.

Several factors contribute to Louisiana’s raising insurance rate, including the state’s high rate of uninsured drivers and many others carrying minimal coverage, Donelon says. And if you live in the New Orleans or Baton Rouge metro areas, it’s likely your rate hike will be higher. Rates are, on average, about 25% higher in the metro areas, where a large chunk of the state’s auto litigation originates, he says.
