U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu is urging Department of Energy officials to approve a loan application from Next Autoworks, which plans to build fuel-efficient, low-cost automobiles in Monroe. Landrieu, D-New Orleans, questioned DOE officials about the loan guarantee application, according to The (Monroe) News Star. Next Autoworks needs $321.1 million to start up the auto assembly plant. The state and local governments have offered $67 million in grants, $12.8 million in employee training services and an estimated $33.8 million in tax abatements. The state funding could be threatened unless there is some kind of commitment from the DOE. See the full story here.
