About 16 million passengers will travel on U.S. airlines during the eight-day Labor Day holiday period, a 3.5% drop from the amount of passenger traffic in the previous year. The Air Transport Association of America, an airline trade group, says the decline is happening even though average fares have fallen year-over-year for the first six months of the year. The ATA blames the drop in business to the worldwide recession and volatile fuel prices. The drop in business is taking its toll: The number of scheduled domestic departures is down 22% for the fourth quarter when compared with the end of 2008. That comes to 6,600 flights per day.
