The Louisiana Workforce Commission reports initial claims for unemployment insurance in the state rose to 5,978 for the week ending June 6. The commission attributes the rise, up from 5,753 for the week ending May 30, to more first-time filings for jobless benefits in the wood product-manufacturing sector. The figure compares with 3,904 claims for the comparable week of 2008. The number of people receiving continued unemployment benefits increased from 52,411 to 54,859 during the last week in May. For the comparable week of 2008, there were 21,872 such claims.
