Louisiana’s congressional delegation is making a new push to get money from a Gulf of Mexico oil spill fund dedicated to restoring the Gulf Coast. Sens. Mary Landrieu, D-La., and David Vitter, R-La., say they will try to get BP money dedicated to the Gulf Coast. Landrieu says she’d file a bill to make sure at least 80% of penalties BP pays are spent on Gulf restoration. Meanwhile, Vitter has filed a bill seeking to get BP to pay for ecosystem repairs soon rather than wait for the natural resource damage assessment process to play out. He says that process could take 10 to 20 years. “We can’t sit back and let BP drag their feet with reports and studies on how Louisiana’s coast was harmed,” Vitter says.
