Louisiana added 800 jobs from January to February, the only state to record a month-to-month increase. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics says every other state and the District of Columbia lost non-farm jobs from January to February, with California dropping 116,000 positions. According to the BLS, there are 1.9 million people working in Louisiana. The number of jobs in Louisiana increased by 6,200 from February 2008 to February 2009, a 0.3% increase from year to year. Tim Barfield, executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission, says the statistics show that employers are still hiring and opportunities exist for Louisiana residents.
